Oia village is a traditional town in Santorini's northwestern region. It is also known as 'Apano Meria' or 'Anomeria,' and the people who live there are known as 'Apanomerites.' The town of Oia is around 150 meters above sea level. Oia has a panoramic view across the caldera to the volcano, Thirassia, and virtually the entire island from the edge of the Caldera cliffs and so are oia hotels.

The cave houses cut into the volcanic rock on the Caldera cliffs and the Captain's residences are the two forms of dwellings in Oia. The cave houses used to be the dwellings of ship sailors, whilst the Captain's mansions were the homes of the wealthy class of ship owners. Many of Oia village's chapels were dedicated to sailors.
