Gambling In Ancient Times And Its Presence Nowadays
Gambling and betting are by no means concepts that emerged in the recent years. In fact, the first time that such occurrences took place date back to 2000 B.C., and dice, an object associated with gambling, have been found in tombs dating back to the times of ancient Egypt. Dice have also been widespread in ancient Greece, with evidence of this found not only on vases, but even for religious purposes. Marked ankle bones were utilized by diviners to determine possible outcomes of the future actions of the believers. Ankle bones were also used by the Greeks for gambling purposes, their preference towards it stemming from their belief that gambling results were entirely up to the will of the gods.
Gods that bestowed their favor towards gamblers were present in a vast majority of ancient religions, and it is very possible that their followers would pray to them, asking for free betting tips as favors. The Romans especially took asking for divine assistance to a different level, for in chariot races, an event that commanded the attention of gamblers, both the chariot drivers and the betters would commission lead tablets wishing for good or ill fortune upon other drivers.
Nowadays, betting is often prevalent in dedicated betting shops, or online, with flocks of people asking for free betting tips either in store or by browsing the internet, and the acts betted upon include most modern sports of either amateur or professional level.
